2pm | Unfamiliar Encounters: From Alienation to Spectacle in New Media Art
Short Description:
Explore how museums and curators help audiences encounter and interpret technologically complex artworks.
Description:
Since the emergence of media art in the 1960s and 1970s, artists have worked with forms, systems and processes that challenge established ways of experiencing art. As these practices have entered museums and festivals, questions arise around how audiences encounter technologies that may be unfamiliar or difficult to understand. This panel explores the tension between alienation and spectacle: between preserving a sense of uncertainty and the desire to make technologically complex work accessible, engaging and immersive. Bringing together perspectives from different institutions, the discussion considers how curatorial approaches shape the ways audiences encounter, interpret and connect with new media art.
Moderator:
Gonzalo Herrero Delicado (Curator & Educator, Central Saint Martins / Royal College of Art, London)
